Six Years of Caring for What Matters

As Great Lakes Clothing Care celebrates six years in Holland, we're looking back at where we've been—and at the people and stories that have made those years matter.

October marks a special anniversary for us.

On October 1, 2020, Lemon Fresh Cleaners closed its doors at our Butternut Drive location, and Great Lakes Clothing Care officially took its place.

In some ways, that was a beginning. In other ways, it was simply the next chapter of a story that had already been unfolding for years.

Great Lakes Wedding Gown Specialists began in January 2006, caring for wedding gowns and helping brides protect some of the most meaningful garments they would ever own. Over time, our services grew. Our team grew. And eventually, so did our vision for what Great Lakes could be.

Six years after opening Great Lakes Clothing Care, I've been thinking less about the number and more about what we've learned along the way.

There Is Usually a Person Behind the Garment

It can be easy to think we're in the business of cleaning clothes.

And, technically, we are.

But a garment is rarely just a garment.

It's the suit someone needs for an important interview.

It's the band uniform a student proudly wears onto the field.

It's a favorite sweater someone isn't ready to give up.

It's the wedding dress that's about to become part of a family's story.

Sometimes it's even a Star Wars or Star Trek-inspired wedding outfit—complete with dresses, suits and capes!

Recently, we had the privilege of helping Tom and Jennifer prepare several pieces for their wedding. Their celebration included their personalities and interests in such a fun way, and our team got to play a small part in getting everything ready for their day.

Their wedding was in September, and now we're eagerly waiting to see the pictures!

Those are the moments that remind us why our tagline has become:

We Care for What Matters.

Because what we're really caring for isn't simply fabric.

We're caring for something that matters to a person.

Sometimes You Know the Message Is Getting Out

This fall, we've also been seeing something else that makes us smile: So many band uniforms are coming through our doors!

Earlier this year, we began partnering with West Ottawa Public Schools to care for their band, orchestra and choir uniforms. We also offer all local students 25% off cleaning for school band, orchestra and choir uniforms.

Now we're seeing families actually use it.

One uniform arrives. Then another. And another.

For a small local business, that's exciting. It means a family heard about something we offer, remembered it when they needed us, and trusted us with something important.

Caring Beyond Our Counters

Our belief that we should care for what matters doesn't stop with clothing.

Through Great Lakes Cares, we set aside funds and time to support organizations doing meaningful work in our community.

Our September partner was Boys & Girls Club of Greater Holland, and we've been collecting supplies at both Great Lakes locations.

As September came to a close, something interesting happened: the boxes were just beginning to fill.

So rather than ending the partnership simply because the calendar changed, we're continuing it into October.

Sometimes caring well means giving something a little more time.

We'll continue collecting supplies throughout the month and look forward to delivering what our team and customers have gathered.

Six Years—and Still Learning

Owning a small business has taught me that growth isn't always about getting bigger.

Sometimes growth looks like getting better at listening.

Better at noticing.

Better at fixing something when it goes wrong.

Better at recognizing the people behind the clothes.

And better at saying thank you.

So as Great Lakes Clothing Care turns six, that's what I want to do most.

Thank you.

Thank you to the customers who followed us from Lemon Fresh into Great Lakes.

Thank you to those who discovered us somewhere along the way.

Thank you to the families who trust us with everyday clothing, uniforms, wedding gowns and treasured pieces.

And thank you to our team—the people doing the cleaning, pressing, spotting, alterations, customer service, pickup and delivery, gown care and all the little things most customers never see.

Six years later, we're still here in Holland, still learning, and still grateful for the privilege of caring for the things that matter to you.

Here's to the next chapter.

We Care for What Matters.
